Visual Creativity: What It Means to Me

In the 70s, a friend in the advertising business looked at some of the pictures I took while making a 3 month trip across the US. He told me that I had a strong point of view. I never understood what he meant by that. I had just been photographing what I saw and that looked interesting.

In 2004, a retired professional photographer friend looked at both my photography and digital art. He told me that he thought of me as a creative thinker, but never realized that I was so visually creative. I think I understand what he was saying.

My daughter and I joke about our demented thought processes. Our upstairs bathroom has an old tile floor with random patterns in it. One day, we went into the bathroom and discussed the images we saw in the random patterns on the floor. Some of the things I see in the floor are Andy Capp (comic strip character), Gidney (a moon man from the old Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon), Ghandi and a monkey wearing a fez.

In this section of the blog, I plan to discuss what I see and how I create an image from it.

Sometimes I look for the juxtaposition of the great and the small (like seeing a galaxy merged with a young fern). Other times I look for a splash of color in an image that I turn sepia. Yet other times, there’s just an interesting or whimsical scene.

I hope you enjoy the art and the thought processes and I’ll be interested in your comments.
